The Green Patch  #12

Consolidate!

Downsizing isn’t just for retirees. We can all live with less clutter, fewer toys & fewer chores.  Organization is key to successful de-cluttering.  Determine what you really need; cull the rest.  Smaller, more efficient
Homes & yards can equate to reduced carbon footprints and less water usage.

Conserve!

Consider formulating a ‘power budget’ just as you would formulate a ‘household budget’.  Start by performing an energy audit, and then reduce power consumption by using Energy Star appliances, compact fluorescent light bulbs and point-of-use surge protectors to stop ‘vampire’ power usage by your home’s entertainment center.  Also try utilizing these well known, but seldom used practices: lower thermostats during inactive periods and at night, close curtains on winter nights but open them wide on sunny, winter days.  Reduce gasoline usage by planning ahead so you can consolidate your trips to town.  Though we in North America take clean water for granted, it’s a precious resource that we can protect if we’re willing to conserve, reuse and even do without.  Low flow toilets & shower heads (at less than 2.5 gal/min) are excellent water conservation options.

Collect!

Rain barrels, which collect roof run-off, provide an excellent source of water for lawns & gardens, allowing well water to be conserved.  Harvesting other elements plentiful in the mountains, such as wind and sun, is a smart way to benefit from free, renewable resources.
