The Green Patch  #11

Green It!

Even before Green Building starts, consider conserving and planting trees & shrubs near your home (definitely south, possibly east, west & north) for shade, protection from wind, privacy and appearance.  Trees provide a very natural, soothing atmosphere for relaxed living.  We should consider trees for their texture, shimmer & sounds – from when a gentle breeze passes through them, to when a strong wind blows around them.

Cool It!

Passive layout & design are the first steps in a comprehensive plan.  House orientation and placement of windows and doors can sometimes be adjusted for natural cooling effects from shade and prevailing winds.  Conversely, in winter, these same considerations can favorably impact heating requirements. And, for comfortable living, active ventilation and cooling can bring benefits to occupants by providing fresh air and cooled and dehumidified air.  Such benefits can often be provided by solar power, wind power, and possibly solar cooling.

Save It!

Economy can be achieved from these suggestions. Trees & shrubs likely will lower cooling costs and definitely will reduce heating costs. For many, the “curb appeal” of a house with mature, well placed trees and shrubs is a big plus.  The owner positively expresses “I enjoy living here! I want to save and preserve!!”  Yes, we can be eco-friendly as we practice eco-living, with economy.
